This is an actual pamphlet the TTC produces and distributes. This pamphlet, like many other non-transit related efforts sucks (TTC store in Union station I’m looking at you), here’s why:

  • The advice is pretty stupid.
  • Whatever it cost to come up with this campaign, it was too much.
  • Why is the escalator the focus for safety? What about getting shot on the platform or pushed on the stairs? Ugh, how do they even prioritize the escaltor above other more important safety considerations?

Ultimately, I still use the TTC everyday. But I’m not a fan. Just for spite, I’m gonna have to start not following this pamphlet. And where the heck is my Mallrats reference? Talk about pure failure.

This book was more than half amazing because it had many moments and character attitudes that I could relate to. Even though its been a while since I’ve read it, I still remember the book fondly for the following reasons:

  • Very closely matched my own life! Like the characters, I am a CBC and went to Waterloo etc. If you want an idea of my experience in university, this book will give it to you.
  • I understood the implicit motivations behind some of the characters decisions even though it was not necessarily spelled out to the reader.  Admitted I did project myself onto the characters a bit.
  • The Venn Diagram showing the intersection of racial group hook ups, while not factually true, is definitely in the spirit of many CBC boy’s thinking. Although it does not hold for my own brother! He broke out of the Venn Diagram and everyone who has seen the diagram, and is CBC, has been suitably impressed with him.

I don’t think I could say any one of the characters was very close to who I am, but I definitely recognized their position on a ton of stuff. If you’re a CBC this is pretty much a must read, if you’re not, read it anyway.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Movie picfplus

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

This movie is quite long. For some, that’s an automatic no, fortunately (I think) I have the time to watch it and even blog about it. It’s good, better than most (still not the best of 2008) but deserves an F+. I liked it because:

  • You get attached to the characters as much, if not more so, that are not Benjamin Button. Maybe not all of them, but you find a few that you can connect with.
  • Brad Pitt’s transformation is pretty damn amazing, I just believed and did not even think about how it was done until after the movie was over.
  • Stephen Colbert and The Daily Show reference this movie a bunch, and I enjoy the fact I understand the references.

This movie is a good, while I’m not necessarily compelled to own it, but I did feel quite satisfied at the end (if not a bit sad.

I’ve liked Daniel Craig as Bond, even though Quantum of Solace was fun but insane. However, even Craig was not enough for me to really recommend watching it, because:

  • Every time I look at Daniel Craig, I keep thinking of Bond. Hard to believe he was this character.
  • I thought it forgot its own premise. I thought everyone contributed, but it did not seem so.
  • Accents did not seem genuine… I guess they tried hard, just not hard enough.

Ultimately, I just could not believe in this movie. Don’t bother watching this movie, there’s much better out there.

The Wrestler Poster

This movie did a lot of things right that you don’t necessarily get all in one movie. In addition to appealing to the wrestling-loving child of the 80’s and 90’s in me, these are the things that were done great:

  • Casting. Rourke and Tomei are exactly perfect because I totally suspended belief that they are these people and now it’s impossible for me to separate these characters from these actors.
  • Ending. Specifically, it leaves questions as to what happens but answers the same either way. You have to watch the movie to understand what I mean.
  • Locations. The locations fit great with the theme of the movie (from the wrestling venues, to the strip joint, and his kid’s neighbourhood.

I could go on and on about how I like this movie and that I think of all the Oscar movies I’ve seen, this is the best for both overall and Best Actor. Bottom line, watch this movie you won’t regret it. If only I could give out more than an F+… but I can’t.

I liked this book, but for some reason I put it down for months and did not touch it even though I was about 50 pages from the end. I just finished it last night and I still remembered the story and the characters. That alone is enough to justify and F+, but here are some additional reasons:

  • The ending is unexpected and great.
  • The main character is not fully likable but I saw and understood his point of view.
  • No real dead zones of filler.

Anyways, its a book that’s not hard to read and is thoroughly enjoyable, you can borrow my copy because I’m pretty sure I’ll remember the story without having to reread the book.

This shooter was reviewed either ok or bad and I definitely disagree because:

  • Unleashing dogs is awesome, drives home how effective dogs can be as killing machines.
  • Flamethrowers that act like they should.
  • The multiplayer works well, can’t say it did for Call of Duty 4.

Call of Duty is a worthwhile way to shoot people in the face, what else do you really need to know? Nothing, so go play this game.

CoD4 fanboys and Treyarch haters need to just relax and enjoy the game as it is and not worry about who made it.

Even if you are a slim man, you should not wear these trendy jeans ever. My reasons are:

  • If you’re not a stick, you’ll look like a ice cream cone.
  • They are like tube tops but jeans, wrapping tightly making you looking like you will explode.
  • 5 years from now, you’ll look back and say ugh, so dumb.

Bottom line, skinny jeans don’t look good on guys. Do not waste your money.

Penn and Teller Bullshit!fplusPenn & Teller: Bullshit!

The pseudo-documentary Michael Moore style show has been around for 6 seasons so far and I’d like it to keep going for as long as it keeps these elements:

  • Honestly biased commentary. Their biased, but they don’t pretend not to be biased and they tell you that.
  • Funny guests, the people they interview are unintentionally funny.
  • Nudity. These guys put in guys and girls naked as much as possible.

Bottom line: the name of show is Bullshit, Penn and Teller are controversial, but Penn and Teller is nothing close to Bullshit.

I actually own this Portable Media Player (PMP) based on some overblown reviews (ahem CNet!). Avoid this PMP because:

  • Proprietary cable… you lose this thing and you’re screwed.
  • Unresponsive OS, it takes just too long to load music/video.
  • Fragile.

I broke this within a year. Buy a Zune or an iPod. Archos is dead to me.
